25 Windows Hidden Tools You Seldom Use

Are you a Windows XP User ? How many utilities do you know that is built-in Windows XP ? Notepad, Wordpad, Character 25 Windows Hidden ToolsMap, Calculator, Microsoft Paint, these are the few utilities that I usually use.But out of blue,Windows Xp is a fully loaded package which has a lot of apparently hidden utilities which are seldom accessed by a basic or normal computer users ; and trust me,they still pack a lot of punch.

To run any of these apps go to Start > Run and type the executable name (i.e. charmap) and press Enter.

Character Map (charmap.exe) - Very useful for finding unusual characters.

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) – The usual Disc cleanup.

Clipboard Viewer (clipbrd.exe) - Views contents of Windows clipboard.

Dr Watson (drwtsn32.exe) - Troubleshooting tool, runs when windows crashes.

DirectX diagnosis (dxdiag.exe) - Diagnose & test DirectX, video & sound cards.

Private character editor (eudcedit.exe) - Allows creation or modification of characters.

IExpress Wizard (iexpress.exe) - Create self-extracting / self-installing package.

Microsoft Synchronization Manager (mobsync.exe) - Appears to allow synchronization of files on the network for when working offline. Apparently undocumented.

Windows Media Player 5.1(mplay32.exe) - Retro version of Media Player, very basic.

ODBC Data Source Administrator (odbcad32.exe) – Database connection utility for support with external servers, create ODBC data sources,to administer remote databases or for supporting the ODBC database utility in Visual basic language.

Object Packager (packager.exe) - To do with packaging objects for insertion in files, appears to have comprehensive help files.

System Monitor (perfmon.exe) - Very useful, highly configurable tool, tells you everything you ever wanted to know about any aspect of PC performance, for budding uber-geeks only.

Program Manager (progman.exe) - Legacy Windows 3.x desktop shell.

Remote Access phone book (rasphone.exe) - Documentation is virtually non-existent.

Registry Editor (regedt32.exe or regedit.exe) – For making custom changes or hacking the Windows Registry.

Network shared folder wizard (shrpubw.exe) - Creates shared folders on network.

File signature verification tool (sigverif.exe) - This tool will search the operating system and identify any unsigned device drivers installed on the system. It will also verify all signed device drivers.

Volume Control (sndvol32.exe) - I've included this for those people that lose it from the System Notification area.

System Configuration Editor (sysedit.exe) - Modify System.ini & Win.ini just like in Win98! .

Syskey (syskey.exe) - Secures XP Account database, use with care, it's virtually undocumented but it appears to encrypt all passwords, I'm not sure of the full implications.

Microsoft Telnet Client (telnet.exe) – Built in telnet client which can be used to connect to servers to sent emails or to hack :) This is disabled in in vista  but you can re-enable it by going to

Control panel –> Programs and Features –> Click "Turn Windows features on or off" on left –> Scroll down and check "Telnet Client.

Driver Verifier Manager (verifier.exe) - Seems to be a utility for monitoring the actions of drivers, might be useful for people having driver problems. Undocumented.

Windows for Workgroups Chat (winchat.exe) - Appears to be an old NT utility to allow chat sessions over a LAN, help files available.

System configuration (msconfig.exe) - Can use to control startup programs, make changes to startup of XP.

Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) - Used to manage group policies, and permissions. Its an Administrator only tool.

Unlock Yahoo when Account is Blocked

I found this whilst stumbling through net,It seemed to me a very useful known trick but still worthwhile to post it Unlock Yahoo when Account is Blockedhere. When you or someone else enters an incorrect login multiple times then Yahoo! locks the account for "security reasons" and you are unable to access your chat names. Cool thing is that, these are a piece of cake to unlock. All you need is a list of Yahoo servers to log in with. Every time you login, you are using what's called a server to access yahoo. You login with a cookie, which is sort of like an information packet or ID proving that you are who you claim to be, and the account is yours.

When people attempt to log your name in multiple times with a locking tool, all they are doing is logging in over and over with an incorrect password until your cookie expires, which means you will no longer be allowed to login. So, when you find yourself locked, what you need to do is refresh your cookie. But how can you do that when the yahoo server you were using has blocked you?

Simple, find another server. Yahoo has servers all over the place. There are more than I'd care to count. I'll include a pretty decent sized list with this tutorials. All you have to do is paste one of these servers in your browser and log in on the page you see. Unless you have been locked on that server as well, you will receive a fresh cookie and will be able to log in to messenger again.

Tons of people try to go through their email and login there to unlock an account, but a smart locker will shut down your mail server first, then cut off your chat server. Most people don't know what to do if the email is blocked, so they give up trying. That's why I don't even bother with the email method. I simply pick another server, log in, and I'm good to go. There are so many servers out there that it is impossible to lock them all. Even if they could, the lock is only for about 12 hours, and then you're back in business.

Disable Writing to USB Drives

A common security concern at organizations is allowing users to plug in a usb flash drive, because they could so easily copy corporate data.Since Windows XP SP2, you can disable writing to USB devices altogether using a simple registry hack.however one should also note that if you are using this trick, you should make sure that the users are not administrators on the computer, because they could easily change this setting back.

Here it is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000001

Paste the code into a notepad file, and then save it as a registry file.Double click it and voila, you have successfully prevented the write access to the USB drive.

Once you have double clicked the registry, you will have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

This works on Windows Vista as well. Here's the window you'll get when you try and write to a USB drive:

Disable Writing to USB Drives

If you want to enable the write access again, then copy this code and paste the code into a notepad file, and then save it as a registry file.Double click it and write access will be enabled again.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000000'

Stay tuned for more tips and hacks.

Buying Digital Camera – A Definitive guide

Prologue

Its Holiday season again and I know You will be itching to buy a new gadget this time.Recession has made us a little conservative on resources but we are never too late to satisfy our gadget hunger.Digital cameras have gotten cheap now days. With the flurry of available products and loads of camera jargon is sure to drive you crazy if you are buying them this fall.Brace up,here is a definitive guide to buy a digital camera.Buying Digital Camera – A Definitive guide

Megapixels

When it comes to megapixels, the more the better. I recommend a minimum of 2, but 3 or 4 is great. We did a test to see if a camera with 2.3 megapixels (actually 1.92 - 1600 x 1200) could produce a good quality 8x10. Make sure its the actual resolution not the software enhanced resolution.

Turns out it can, if you have the right paper and printer. We used HP Premium Plus photo paper with an HP 970 series printer and made a fantastic 8 x 10. The resolution at 8x10 (we had to crop in to make the picture proportional to 8x10) was only 150 DPI. Most printers would not make a real good 8x10 at that resolution, but this one did. So, if you want to be sure you can get good 8 x 10s, you may want to go with a 3 megapixel camera or better (that gives you around 200 DPI at 8x10 size, still not quite the optimum 300 DPI, but it looks good with the right printer).

Optical VS Digital Zoom

The optical zoom magnifies (zooms in) using glass.Zoom (range encompassing at least 36mm to 130mm, 35mm equivalent) is necessary requisites for camera’s of today. The digital zoom basically crops out the edge of the picture to make the subject appear closer, causing you to lose resolution or to get an interpolated resolution (i.e. the camera adds pixels). Neither of which help image quality.

Finally, make sure you get enough (optical) zoom. A 2x zoom isn't going to do much for you. A 3x is the average you'll find in most digital cameras will probably be good for most uses. More on lenses later.

Connection

How does the camera connect to your computer? USB is a must have for any digital camera Firewire is the way to go if your PC suports If you have a USB port in your computer, you'll want a camera that can connect via USB as opposed to a slow serial connection.Firewire is the way to go if your pc supports it,its the fastest means to transfer the data from your digital device to your pc.

Storage

Most cameras use removable storage memory to record images. The most popular forms of removable storage memory are Compact Flash cards, Sony Memory Sticks, and Smart Media Cards. Most digital cameras come with one 16MB card. The capacity (size) of the image memory storage will determine how many images you can store.Compact Flash, Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, or SD/HC are the cards that are supported by the camera’s of today.Thers is a flurry of Digital Camers available today

LCD Viewfinders

Most digital cameras are equipped with a liquid-crystal display (LCD) viewfinder that allows you to see what your picture will look like before you take it. LCD viewfinders also permit you to view saved images and delete the ones that you don't like.

Picture Formats

When you're trying to decide on which digital camera to get, check and see how many different picture formats it supports.

You want something that can produce both uncompressed (usually TIFF) and compressed (usually JPEG) images. I personally use the high quality JPEG setting on my camera for most of my shooting. TIFFs are just too big and the difference in quality is not ascertainable by mere mortals.

You also want to be able to shoot at a lower resolution than the camera's maximum. That way, If you're running short on memory, you can squeeze a few more shots on your memory stick.

Auxiliary Lens / Flash

This was a biggie for me. While a 3x zoom may work for the "average" user, I needed something that allowed me to do some wide angle work as well as have a good telephoto lens.Automatic, fill, red-eye reduction are type of lens modes to look for in a digital camera. Keep in mind Auxiliary Lens / Flash

In addition to lenses, good flash is a must have for a digital camera.. The flash that is built into most of these cameras gives you a top range of 15-20 feet - at best. If you need more reach than the small built in flash can deliver, then make sure you can attach an external flash to any camera you consider. As an added bonus, if you get a camera that can take an external flash, you can place that flash on a bracket and eliminate red-eye.

Battery Life/Power

Limited battery life is one of the biggest problems with digital cameras. The more you use the LCD viewfinder, the faster you will go through batteries. Many digital cameras are packed with battery chargers and rechargeable batteries, but some are not. Rechargeable batteries and a charger will typically add from $30 to $100 to the cost of a digital camera.

ISO

The ISO reading indicates how sensitive your camera is to the light. A higher ISO indicates you can take pictures at low light too, but at the expense of quality. Higher ISO is especially useful in taking pictures indoors or in parties. For film cameras, you would have to buy film with certain ISO ratings. But in dig cams you can set this value when you are shooting(if the feature is available).

Flash Distance

Speaking of flashes, make sure you check the distance the built in flash is good for. You don't want a camera with a wimpy flash that only travels a few feet (well, unless you can get an external flash for it as described above).

Battery Type

This may not sound important, but it is. Anyone who owns a digital camera can tell you they eat batteries the way a Buying Batteries DO matter!!!!sumo wrestler eats at a buffet. Make sure the camera can run on regular (or rechargeable) "AA" type batteries. You don't want a camera that eats through expensive lithium batteries every 10 shots or so.

One thing to remember about digital cameras, they do eat through batteries. I recommend getting some Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable for it. I have some for mine and they have saved me a fortune.

Epilogue

Choosing a digital camera is not easy, but still I think you have enough metal to cut your teeth through the market. Finally, buy the BEST camera you can possibly afford or wait until the price drops on one with the type of features you want.

I hope you get the best out there.

Till then Keep learning.

Flash Tutorial Links

Most of the times I have been intrigued by the quality of flash based games and animations which appear on net and dazzle the netizens.I always thought of learning Adobe Flash (previously Macromedia flash) and to create my own animations and games. However, due to lack of good tutorials I wasn’t able to learn much about it and my bandwidth Adobe Flash Tutorial Linksdon’t permits me to download all the video tutorials the deviants of flash had to offer. So I have compiled a list of tutorials and resource website which offer fantastic flash resources and tutorials for those who crave for them.
I found these flash actionscript tutorials while stumbling across the net. Many of them are game design, sound and server side specific.Others are more general.
I hope you enjoy them whilst making full use of them and most important,I hope you share your flash tutorial bookmarks too !!!

and Yes..Merry Christmas folks :)

Proxies and Chaining Wingates To Surf Internet Anonymously

This is a tutorial on chaining proxies for the use of becoming more anonymous while online. There aren’t enough tutorials online about this subject so I decided to make an attempt at writing one. Since it’s on the subject, I included a section on chaining wingates to become anonymous on telnet. Download Wingate from download.com
I’m going to assume that most of you have already used a proxy before to hide your real IP address or domain or maybe just used one to surf anonymously online. If you didn’t, well hopefully you can keep up and possibly learn how to use a proxy. Its also best if you know what an IP address or Domain is first, before reading this tutorial. Hmm, I guess I have to show you where to find a proxy too. Well I find that good, updated proxy websites are…

It will be up to you to figure out which ones work or not. I’m not going to do all the work for you .

Proxy Servers
A proxy is a server that acts as a gateway between your computer and your destination (website, IRC chat, etc.). These proxies receive requests from users to view, for example, a web page. The proxy will then forward the request to the internet, find your requested page, then send the web page back to you, the user. Most proxies come with a cache (sounds like “cash”) feature that saves former websites that were visited on that proxy. Think of cache as a proxy’s storage room. Each site that you make the proxy visit, it saves in its own storage area (cache). So if the user or someone else requests the same site again later on, the proxy will go back into its cache, find the web page and send it back to the user. This saves time because the proxy doesn’t have to go search the Internet for the web page. It just pulls the site out of its cache.

The use of proxies to stay anonymous is a favorite thing to do among people on the Internet who are either paranoid or just security conscious. The anonymity factor comes from the proxy’s ability to hide your true Internet address. For example, if I were to run a scan on your computer right now, I would get the Internet address that was given to you by your ISP (internet service provider), but if I were to scan you while you were using a proxy, then I would get the Internet address of the proxy server. Basically the whole proxy picture looks like this…

[User]>>>>>[Proxy]>>>>>[Web Pages]

Simple enough, right? Right. So now let’s get to the chaining part.

Proxy Chaining
Proxy chaining is merely connecting to more than one proxy and then to your intended destination. You can use as many proxy servers as you can or want. The more you have, the more anonymous you will be. Remember, it doesn’t matter how many proxies you chain together, you will never be 100% anonymous. Let’s look at an example…

[User]>>>>>[Proxy1]>>>>>[Proxy2]>>>>>[Proxy3]>>>>>[Proxy4]>>>>>[Destination]

The example shows that for a proxy chain to be created, the user must first connect to Proxy1. Once the user is connected to Proxy1, from Proxy1, the user will connect to Proxy2, from Proxy2, the user will connect to Proxy3, from Proxy3, the user will connect to Proxy4, from Proxy4, the user will then connect to the intended destination (web page, Unix server, ftp server, etc.). All together we have 4 proxies in this example. Each proxy is a link in the chain. If the user would be scanned while on the proxy chain in the example, the IP address or domain of Proxy4 would appear on the scan. Now the problem with proxies is they tend to “die out” in a few weeks or less. It all depends. So if Proxy2 were to cease functioning, the chain wouldn’t work. You would need to get rid of Proxy2 and just use Proxy1, Proxy3, and Proxy4 or find another proxy to take Proxy2’s place. This is why proxy chaining can be a real pain if you are using them just to surf the net. If one dies, you have to figure out which one is the one not working, so you have to go through each one to check them or until you find the one that isn’t working.

Proxy chaining is a necessity if you plan on using proxies to execute a “hack”. If you are attempting to gain unauthorized remote access to any server, whether it is through telnet, ftp, or http, chaining is a must. As I said, you will never be 100% anonymous no matter what you do online so it is possible that you still can be tracked even if u chain proxies. Chaining just makes it a lot hard to track someone. To make it even harder, its best to use foreign proxies because if someone wanted to trace you, they would need to get logs of your use of each proxy from each proxy administrator. This could take quite a while or even never at all if one of the proxy’s, or all for that matter, belong to an admin in a country that isn’t too fond of the country you are located in. The longer it takes for the authorities to subpoena the logs of your usage of a single proxy from that proxy’s administrator, the more chance that the other proxies that you used in the chain will have their logs deleted by the time anyone gets to the server administrators of those proxies. So when attempting to do any kind of “hack”, it’s best to use at least five or six proxies in a chain.

HTTP Chaining
HTTP chaining is basically chaining a proxy server in your browser’s address bar.

ex - http://proxy.magusnet.com/-_-http://www.google.com

Notice how the above proxy and destination (yahoo) are seperated by a (-_-) If you wanted to make a chain out of this you would simply add another proxy

ex. - http://proxy.server1.com/-_-http://proxy.server2.com/-_-http://www.destination.com)

Another way to use proxys in your address bar is by adding the proxy IP or domain then the port number.

ex. -  http://anon.free.anonymizer.com:80/http://www.google.com

Notice how the above proxy and destination server are seperated this time by a (/) forward slash instead of a (-_-) dash, underscore, dash. To make a chain out of this you would again simply add another proxy ex.

ex. - http://proxy1:80/http://proxy2:80/proxy3:80/http://www.yahoo.com)

Browser Chaining
To browser chain is fairly easy. I’ll use Internet Explorer as an example since I believe it is the browser that most people have and use. First you need to find the Internet Options. You can do this by either finding the Explorer icon on the desktop, right click on it, then press properties or if you have a browser window already opened if you are online then you can go to Tools (or sometimes its View) and press Internet Options. Now that you have the Internet Options window up you can now go to the Connections tab, then go to the first Settings button (not LAN Settings, the one above it) and click it. Now you should be in the Settings box. Put a check in the box where it says to Use a proxy server. Now if you wanted to surf using one proxy you would merely put the proxy in the Address: space and put the proxy’s port number in the Port: space. To use a chain here you would put in a proxy along with a “:” colon then the port number followed by a space separting the next proxy then a “:” colon then the port number then a space and so on. The last proxy you add should have its port number placed inside the Port: space. If you did it, then it should look like this exactly…

Address: 213.234.124.23:80 121.172.148.23:80 143.134.54.67 Port: 80

Notice that each proxy:port is separated by a space and that the last proxy has its port number placed in the Port: space. Do not check the box marked “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”. Press OK when you see that everything is in working order.

Wingate
A wingate is a proxy server that someone installs onto his/her computer which allows for a single or multiple online connection to take place through port 23, the default telnet port. Depending on their security, some wingates will allow anyone online to connect to them and usually stay “alive” or “working” anywhere from a few days to even months. There are people out there that scan for these Wingates and post the computer’s IP number or domain on their website to give anyone online a free list of them to use. You can also scan them yourself by using programs like WinScan.

Chaining Wingates Using Telnet
I’m going to assume you already know what telnet is so I will just get right down to it. To chain using telnet, you would first bring up the DOS prompt and type in “telnet” then your wingate. (Since telnet’s default port is 23 and all wingates run on port 23, the port number is not necessary but I will add it just to show you how you should type any port number out on screen) Example…

C:\WINDOWS>telnet 61.133.119.130 23

So now you have “telnet”, a space, the wingate IP, a space, then the port number 23. Once you are connected to the wingate it should look like this…

Wingate>

Now you would type your next wingate and port number in, then press enter like so…

Wingate> 203.207.173.166 23

You can continue to do this until you connected to as many Wingates as you need. Once you are finished with your wingates you would connect to your destination. Example…

WinGate>arbornet.org

So now the entire picture would look something like this…

C:\Windows> telnet 61.133.119.130 23

Wingate>203.207.173.166 23

Wingate>135.245.18.167 23

Wingate>m-net.arbornet.org
Connecting to host arbornet.org...Connected
