How to make Opera consume less memory | Opera memory hog gone

I love Opera..Its fast , its efficient, and web experts will agree with me that its the fastesthow to make Opera consume less memory | Opera memory hog gone browser to surf the internet.  Screw Internet explorer, i hate that , safari is too buggy and Firefox , though is good, but has its fair share of memory leaks problems which tend to increase with each new version. Yep..I tried Firefox 4, but as it turns out, it was too heavy for my taste and a lot of installed extensions were not supported, period. The response time increased as I opened a lot of tabs in it and hence, I finally decided to turn on to Opera 11.

I installed it in a jiffy and there we go. Smoother browsing experience and increased productivity :D but then I opened task manager and checked out the memory usage.

Image Name     User Name          CPU        Memory Usage

opera.exe      Administrator       10        430,024 K

Et tu Opera ?

damn..

but fear not..I manage to keep it in limits. Opera is a memory hog but turns out the memory problems are caused due to “Automatic RAM cache” management of Opera. So, here is how you can make opera consume less memory.

  • Open Opera
  • Press Alt + P
  • Go to History and choose memory cache 4 MB and Disk size to anything. Check on “Empty on Exit” and press OK.

Check on “Empty on Exit” and press OK.

  • Once done, type

opera:config

in url bar and press enter.

  • After that scroll down to user preferences and expand it.
  • Find “Automatic RAM Cache” and disable it.

Find “Automatic RAM Cache” and disable it.

  • Once done, restart Opera.

Enjoy, Your opera will take much less RAM :)

cheers.

Browse WAP Sites in Firefox

It suddenly happened to me whilst visiting a mobile site that I was not able to browse it using my vanilla Firefox at my college PC.A quick look at the wild wild  FireFoxweb got me an acceptable solution, and I got WMLBROWSER extension for Firefox. This addon simulates WAP browsing by viewing WML (Wireless Markup Language) pages. Its a must for guys like me who are not happy with the WAP emulators.Although Firefox allows for minimalistic WAP browsing, but some stubborn pages need special addons like WMLBROWSER for proper WAP display.

Add Simple POP3 Mail Client and Notifier to Firefox

If you like to have your entire computing experience within your Firefox window, you might be interested in accessing your POP email accounts directly in Firefox. The Simple Mail extension gives you this functionality, and true to the name it's very simple.

After installation, you should notice the little mail icon in the status bar, which will highlight and display an unread count if there are new messages, but first you'll want to right-click it and open the preferences to add your new account.

image

Here you can add a new account or import from Thunderbird (a feature I did not test)

image

Left-clicking on the mail icon will open the mail client interface, nothing more than a two-paned display of the messages sitting on your server. You can choose to delete the individual message through the right-click menu.

image

The new or reply options bring up the new email dialog, which is also really simple.

Thoughts

I would personally only use this as a pop mail notifier, as the client interface is just far too simple for any serious usage. There are much better options that you could use:

  • Forward your POP email directly to Gmail and access it from there.
  • Sign up for Google Apps for your Domain and use Gmail with your own email domain.
  • Use Gmail's Settings\Accounts tab to add in a POP email account that gmail will check for you.

You can use any of those options in conjunction with the excellent Gmail Manager extension for Firefox.

Firefox 3 Released On June 17 !

Mozilla has set June 17 as the official release day for Firefox 3. The introduction of the new browser marks the beginning of a race for the title of the fastest browser on the market. With more than one million people already pledged to download Firefox 3 on the first day of its release, Firefox 3 could set a Guinness World Record as the most downloaded software with the first 24 hours of launch. Mozilla has set next Tuesday, June 17, as the official release day for the upgraded Firefox 3 browser, following months of beta testing and release candidates that have been publicly available to users over the past few weeks. Firefox 3 will be shipped for both Mac and Windows on the same day.

It Besides code optimization, Firefox 3 brings numerous new features, including one-click bookmarking and tag support in bookmarks, smart location bar, the ability to save and restore browser sessions, smart zoom that enlarges all web page content (not just text) and significantly improved protection against phishing attacks and malware. Mozilla claims that Firefox 3 has 15,000 tweaks and enhancements when compared to Firefox 2. The official release of Firefox appears to be also launching the beginning the battle for the fastest browser on the market. How to make opera and firefox faster

How to make opera and firefox faster
How to make opera and firefox faster

Firefox:

Type in the address bar about:config.
Type pipelining in the filter bar.
Double-click on network.http.pipelining to set its value to TRUE.
Double-click on network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and change its value to 12 or more if you have broadband.(I put mine on 30, i have a 3MBps connection and 512MB of RAM)

If your computer doesn’t have that much of memory and you regularly have many tabs open, use a lower value.

Opera:
Opera is already a very fast browser, but if you would have the choice between fast and faster than fast, what would you choose ? I took the liberty to compile a list of 10 great tips that speed up Opera in several unique ways. Many of the settings can be changed by simply going to Tools > Preferences in Opera but some can only be used by accessing not so obvious ways like ini files.

Please note that everything that I’m describing here worked fine on my computer. It speed up Opera and increased my browsing experience with it tremendously. While most tips will work for any users no matter their connection to the Internet some tips might only increase performance for broadband users.

Disable Name Completion and local network lookup

Whenever you enter a single word into the address field Opera will look in your bookmarks for that name and try to find a local network with the name as well. Server Name Completion tries to append prefixes and suffixes to the name automatically. While this feature might be great for some users it uses time and cpu and should be turned of for faster browsing.

Click on Tools > Preferences, select the Advanced Tab and choose Network from the left menu. Click on Server Name Completion and disable Look for local network machine and try name completion, using.
Increase the time cached images are used before checking for new versions

Opera downloads images to its cache to be able to load them faster (from your hard drive) the next time you visit the website. By default Opera checks every 5 hours if a new version of that image has appeared on the website. If you increase this time you increase your overall performance.

Go to Tools > Preferences and click on the Advanced Tab. Choose History from the left menu and select Every 24 hours or even every week for image checks. You can always refresh the cache manually by typing F5 while visiting the website.
